School children across the region are once again benefiting from the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme which is being delivered for a second successive season by members of the Exeter Chiefs Community department.
After a successful first year, the Chiefs Community team are once again hard at work ensuring the programme, which is aimed at pupils aged 8-9 years-old, is spread far and wide.
With the programme set to be delivered across the country by all 12 Aviva Premiership clubs to over 30,000 youngsters, the Chiefs have just concluded their latest intake of the 2011/12 season to schools across the Westcountry.
Receiving five weeks of initial training, which comprises learning the rules of tag rugby, skill development and team skills, today we welcome youngsters from North Tawton Primary School for a special showpiece event here at Sandy Park.
North Tawton are one of many schools to have taken part in the programme and together with their teacher Sarah Marvin, the group got their chance to form a guard of honour ahead of our Aviva Premiership game against Harlequins, as well as get the chance to see behind the scenes here at the Chiefs on a match-day.
Shortly the Aviva Schools programme is set to head into both Plymouth and North Devon where a number of new schools are set to benefit, whilst at Easter the Chiefs will be staging special cluster festivals in Exeter, Plymouth and Barnstaple where the winners will have the chance to represent the club at Finals Day at Twickenham.

Youngsters from Newton St Cyres A and B teams
School children across Devon are once again benefiting from the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme which is being delivered for a second successive season by members of the Exeter Chiefs Community department.
After a successful first year, the Chiefs Community team are once again hard at work ensuring the programme, which is aimed at pupils aged 8-9 years-old is spread far and wide.
With the programme set to be delivered across the country by all 12 Aviva Premiership clubs to over 30,000 youngsters, the Chiefs have just concluded their first intake of the 2011/12 season to schools in and around the Crediton area.
Receiving five weeks of initial training, which comprises learning the rules, skill development and team skills, the youngsters were then invited to Crediton Rugby Club for the end of programme cluster festival.
Bow School brought three teams to the festival, whilst Newton St Cyres and Landscore brought two; with one apiece from Spreyton and Yeoford.
Clearly the work done during the five weeks prior to the festival had paid dividends as the quality of tag rugby on show was clear to see. Each team featured in three pool games each, before the top two sides in each pool met in the semi-finals.
The last four meetings saw both Newton st Cyres teams progress to the final, whilst Landscore A and B battled it out for the bronze medals. Both games proved close but it was Newton St Cyres B who pinched the gold from their class mates 7-5.
As well as the children benefiting from the programme, teachers were also put through their paces in separate development programme, which allows them to practice their coaching and refereeing skills so that the tag rugby can be continued back at the schools throughout the year.
Pupils at the schools have also been invited to attend a Transition Day at Crediton RFC on November 4 (6pm), where they will have a taste of local club rugby. All these components within the programme are directing children into local grassroots rugby and leaving behind it a workable rugby development in the area.
The Newton St Cyres B side will now play against the other finalists at Sandy Park before the Northampton Saints Game on April 21st.
Next the Chiefs Community team will be delivering the programme in Plymouth, North Devon and Exeter.
