Bicton College

The Exeter Chiefs Academy and Bicton College are working in partnership to offer first class rugby training to aspiring rugby players whilst giving them the opportunity to combine this with quality education.

Structured around an academic timetable, the Rugby Academy aims to support, nurture and develop young players in an attempt to reach their potential, with many students taking advantage of the on-site residential support at the college’s stunning grounds. Residential students benefit from a detailed nutritional plan, pastoral support as well as extended access to the on-site gym and other facilities. More local students can also access the above on a daily basis. A typical week consists of a mix between the following key components:

•    Technical and tactical training sessions
•    Video analysis delivery (team and individual)
•    Individual skill development sessions
•    A detailed and progressive conditioning programme
•    Rehabilitation and recovery work
•    A structured diet plan

The Rugby Academy is supported by a club based strength and conditioning coach and physiotherapy support. Training sessions take place at Sandy Park using the 1st team facilities, including the club gym. In line with the club senior squads, the players training and playing kit is supplied by Samurai Sportswear and sponsored by the South West Communications group.

To access the model, players must be studying at Bicton College or one of the college’s academic partners. Players can currently study any of the following Bicton based courses in conjunction with the rugby academy:

Sport and Public Services:

•    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence)- 3 A-level equivalent
•    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure)- 3 A-level equivalent
•    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services- 3 A-level equivalent
•    Level 2 Diploma in Sport
•    Level 2 Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure)
•    Level 2 Diploma in Public Services

Agriculture and Land Based studies:

•    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Land Based Technology- 3 A-level equivalent
•    Level 2 Diploma in Land Based Technology
•    Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture- 3 A-level equivalent
•    Level 2 Diploma in Agriculture
•    Level 3 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture
•    NPTC level 2 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture

There are many other courses run at the college that can in principle be tailored to the rugby model if needed.
