Sandford are kings of mid Devon
The annual Mid Devon Tag Rugby Festival was held recently at Crediton RFC with more than 23 schools taking part with around 350 pupils putting the tags on to challenge for the honours.
Pool 1 had a fight to the finish with Bickleigh Primary and Newton St Cyres topping the pool and seeing themselves through to the quarter-finals.
Pool 2 was tight but Sandford A and The Duchy Chiefs both came out on top with even points and add themselves to the quarter-finalists.
Pool 3 was dominated by Silverton and Tidcombe primary schools, who did see off some strong opposition to remain in control.
Pool 4 went to the wire with a three-way tie resulting in a try count back with Haywards A missing out on a further spot in the festival to Tedburn St Mary along with Two Moors Primary.
The first quarter-final was between Bickleigh Primary and Sandford A with a length to length display of tag rugby ending up a six-all draw. Extra time saw Sandford A get the result they wanted.
Newton St Cyres fought gallantly for the next spot against a strong Duchy Chiefs side, but the Chiefs got their head in front when it was needed and took the tie 8-6 to join Sandford A.
Silverton and Two Moors followed suit with a battle to the end which had Silverton take the honours 7-6 and see themselves advance to the semis.
The last quarter-final again proved a torrid affair and saw a very determined Tedburn St Mary side go down to Tidcombe Primary.
Silverton, fresh of the pitch, took on a Sandford A side in the first semi-final, who were recovering from a long battle that included extra time the round before. Sandford A proved their worth with a vintage display and ended up 9-6 winners to make it to the finals for a second year in a row.
Semi-final two was a tighter showdown taking the full five minutes each way to decide who would reach the final alongside Sandford A. The Duchy Chiefs, who had looked strong all day, came out on top with a classy 7-5 win leaving Tidcombe to fight out the battle for third and fourth with Silverton.
That match provided a great display with both teams proving their place, which resulted in a 6-5 win to Tidcombe Primary.
The Duchy Chiefs and Sandford A, who both met earlier in the pool stages, were ready for battle again in the final and straight away, they took it to each other in a clinical display from both sides resulting in a draw at the end of normal time. So extra time again for a Sandford A side, who really showed some guts over the day in the heat, but facing a Duchy Chiefs side who has beaten them earlier in the day’s play and were determined to keep that advantage.
Extra time led to a further extra time on top again before Sandford A got the result they were after and took the title with a strong performance to finish off the day.
All in all, a great day was had by all in the hot sun with a cracking display of tag rugby shown by all taking part. A huge thanks to the referees from QECC who showed great leadership skills throughout the day and were a huge help to making the day a success. Well done to all schools taking part and I’m sure we will be seeing them all back again next year in their bid to win the coveted title that the Mid Devon Tag Festival brings.
