15th Annual Chiefs Tag Rugby Festival
Last week saw the running of the 15th Annual Exeter Chiefs Schools Tag Rugby Festival which attracted 10 Exeter Primary schools and more than 150 boys and girls from the schools taking part.
The event was once again hosted by St Luke’s Science & Sports College and was organised and run by staff and students who are involved in their sports leaders course all from West Exe Technology College.

For the fourth consecutive year in a row, it was St Nicholas Catholic Primary school who won the main competition, beating St Michael’s in a high quality final 3 – 1. Both teams came through from two very strong pool stages and had to work hard at every match to secure their semi-final spot before going on win those matches and take them through to the final.
Alphington Primary School beat Wynstream Primary 6 -1 in the plate final which consisted of teams who finished 3rd and 4th after their pool stages . Both teams took the lessons from their losses and went on to improve a huge amount over the day and really enjoy themselves.
Clyst Heath Primary was victorious over Pinhoe Panthers ‘B’ in the bowl fina,l which had all of the rest of the sides from the morning’s competition rounds.
A special mention should go to the year nine students of West Exe Technology College who did an excellent job of refereeing all 40 matches and for the girls on the score desk who kept everybody up to date and informed with all the results.

All teams also had the added bonus of getting their photo taken with the Championship trophy, which the Exeter Chiefs won back in May to gain promotion to the Aviva Premiership Rugby next season. The Community Chiefs department was on hand to hand over the medals and vouchers kindly donated by Intersport Tony Pryce as well as goodie bags along with bread and crumpets supplied by Warburtons.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable day which was played in a good spirit with Wynstream Primary School being voted by the referees to receive the Tony Darby Fair Play Shield for their positive spirit and good sportsmanship. Along with all involved, a big mention must go to Nick Leonard who has been running this tournament from the start and has built it up to where it is today.
Let’s all look forward to the next academic year and the tag season starting all over again.
