Nacho wings in to Sandy Park
Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Elosu has begun training with Chiefs just a few days after putting pen to paper.
The Argentinean prop signed the deal with Chiefs at the end of last week and arrived in Exeter at 7.30am on Tuesday ready for work. After being allowed a day to settle in, Elosu faced the media today.
He said: “I am very happy to be here. It’s a good club with great facilities.
“I was looking for a high level club and this is a great opportunity for me to play rugby. I am glad to be here.
“I arrived yesterday. It is a nice group. All the guys, staff and coaches are very nice. I feel really comfortable here.”
Elosu left his native Argentina when he was 20 after reaching U21s at international level. He spent five years playing in the Italian second division before moving to France to play for Castres and Tarbes. He spent six months at Harlequins before returning to Italy to play for Viadana.
“It was nice to play for Viadana as I got to play in the Heineken Cup,” added the 29-year-old.” We lost all our matches to Leicester, the Ospreys and Clermont Auvergne but we played a great game. We also played in the Italian league but there are only three or four tough matches. The gap behind the top three is huge.”
Now Elosu has the chance to play in the Premiership with Exeter, but he is not chasing international recognition for his efforts.
He said: “When I left Argentina, I forgot all about that. If it comes, it comes; I just want to do my best for Exeter.”
Head coach Rob Baxter was pleased with the swift arrival of his newest player and said today: “I was quite happy to look around the Italian Top 10 for players. There is some good rugby being played over there.
“We wanted a strong scrummaging prop. The Premiership is all about generating quality ball and we think that’s the strength of Ignacio’s game. There are areas he needs to work on but he is a player we can develop. As long as is prepared to work hard, he will do well here.”
Baxter added: “We signed Ignacio at the end of one week and he was here at 7.30am on Tuesday for a day’s training. That shows what a kind of guy he is.”
