Quartet return for Blues session
A Chiefs’ quartet of Chris Bentley, Emyr Lewis James Scaysbrook and Chad Slade has been drafted back into the starting line-up for tomorrow’s game against fourth-placed Bedford Blues.
After racking up eight wins out of eight, Chiefs are keen to push on with their winning ways, but head coach Rob Baxter is not focusing on the result at Goldington Road too much as his squad heads towards a run of three tough games.
He said: “The difficulty is that we are under pressures now and we are a target for other teams, or you could say everyone wants to be in the situation we are in. If the situation changes and we don’t stay top of the table, we will not worry too much, as we are building towards the last 10 games of the season. However, we do want to perform well every week.
“These three games are very, very good for us. By design, we have tried to create a scenario for the players where they meet different challenges throughout the season. We know these games will test them. They have given us a focus for the last month.
“We know tomorrow is going to be a big challenge. Bedford are playing good rugby and the way they play at home makes it tough, but we have been waiting for a number of weeks for a challenge like this.
“I am not massively concerned about the points. We lose our way a bit when we over-focus as a team on results. If we knuckle down and concentrate on individual performance, we are a very good side. This is a high pressure game so we must go up there to perform well.”
Emyr Lewis will be returning to Goldington Road for the first time as a Chiefs player and is hoping to record a win on the back of a good team performance.
“When you look at the fixture list at the start of the season, you look at Bedford away and know it is one of the most difficult places to go and win a game. Every year, Bedford are in the top four or five and they always target big games and do very well in them. But we have trained well and are focused to go up there and come away with a W.”
