WILLOWBANK TAKE MID-DEVON TAG TITLE
2008-06-17
HAYWARDS ARE RUNNERS-UP
Twenty schools from the mid-Devon district compete for the mid-Devon tag festival trophy at Crediton RFC last Friday.
All the schools were placed into four pools for the early rounds and these saw some very competitive matches played out to reach the quarter-finals.
Pool one included of last year’s champions Willowbank Primary School, who were looking to make it two years in a row, but they came up against some stiff opposition and eventually drew with the other pool leaders Haywards Primary School, but went through as pool winners on tries scored, with Haywards taking the runners-up spot into the last eight. Sandford A and Landscore A also racked up some good results to keep the pool well contested.
Pool two saw Silverton Primary School dominate proceedings, winning all six of their ties and booking their place in the next round, but were chased all the way Thorverton Primary School, who won five games to take second spot. Sandford B produced another good run of results on the day for the school, but just came up short and missed out on the next round by a couple of points.
Pool three saw a gritty Tedburn St Mary School lead from the start with some quality ball handling and good teamsmanship to take top of the pool, but were chased all the way by Tidcombe Primary and Kentisbeare Primary, who had to be separated by tries scored on the day to decide who went through to next round. Tidcombe won by points difference and took the next step, but a big mention to Rackenford Primary and Hemyock Primary Schools who also made the top teams work hard for their results.
Pool four was taken out by Cheriton Bishop A who won all five of their pool matches, but were chased hard by St John’s Primary School who fought it out with Landscore B Primary for the second spot. St John’s progressed and took the last quarter-final place to complete the pool stages.
In the quarter-finals, Willowbamk put Thorverton to the sword with a convincing 8-1 demolition. Silverton’s great form in the pool stages deserted them in the next round, going down 5-3 to Haywards, who were proving a tough side to beat. The third quarter-final saw Tedburn St Mary draw with St John’s 6-6 in a tough match. But with a better try tally only by one, Tedburn St Mary went through to the semi-finals along with Cheriton Bishop A who put paid to Tidcombe’s chances with a 7-3 win in the last quarter-final.
Semi-final time, and Willowbank showed their intentions with a convincing 6-0 victory over Tedburn St Mary to book their place in the final for a second year running. In the other semi-final, it was a much closer affair with Haywards and Cheriton Bishop A going from end to end with a great display of skill from both sides to end up with a victory to Haywards .
Third place went to Cheriton Bishop A, who won their final match against a determined Tedburn St Mary side 6-5 to pick up the bronze medals.
The final was to be a titanic game for both teams with extra time having to be played to split the sides and decide the winners for 2008. Willowbank and Haywards traded blows for 14 minutes still to be level at 7-7 at the final whistle. Two minutes each way were played by Keith Fleming, referee for the final, and it was Willowbank who popped there head up at the line running out 10-9 over a Haywards side who looked a tough nut to crack all day.
The trophy was handed over again to the Willowbank captain, much to the delight of the players and school helpers.
We would like to thank all the teachers and assistants for their help on the day as well as the referees from the schools and QECC college for the great job they did, Crediton RFC for the facilities and equipment used, and last but not least, all who took part and made the day a memorable one and showed the quality level of tag rugby in mid-Devon.
