University student Lizzie Hanlon began her rugby career aged 15, when she joined Sutton & Epsom RFC, having previously been a diver.

“I do think I’m built more for rugby than diving, so the physicality also came naturally.

“All the strength and flexibility I developed from diving, even though it doesn’t seem like it would translate, I do think it’s helped me a lot.

“Flexibility in scrums – you can be in more awkward positions and still have a level of strength there.

“Diving helped me progress quicker in the gym too especially at the start. Because the sport is all about such perfect movements, I think I developed good discipline for technique from it.”

While at Sutton & Epsom, she was selected to represent her county Surrey, before moving to Exeter to study biology at the university.

After impressing in her first year at the university, Hanlon was invited to train as part of the wider Exeter Chiefs squad ahead of this season, making her debut away at DMP Sharks.

The 2023/24 season saw Hanlon called up to join John Mitchell's Six Nations training camp.
