Exeter Chiefs lead the way with apprenticeship scheme

Published on: 05/11/2026

Exeter Chiefs are producing a new breed of rugby players that are studying for apprenticeships alongside training for the men’s team.

Two players are currently enrolled at Exeter College to complete apprenticeships to further their careers outside of their commitments to Exeter Chiefs.

Senior academy back-rower Alfie Johns is working towards his level four sports coach apprenticeship while wing Troy Jackson is studying for their level three personal trainer qualification.

Mike Blakeley, group executive director of partnerships & apprenticeships, said: “Exeter Chiefs are really leading the way in using sports-based apprenticeships to ensure their younger players continue to work towards qualifications while furthering their rugby careers.

“With both these apprenticeships being sports-based, Chiefs can provide real work experience as part of their training week. While gaining their qualifications, they can be of real use to the team’s preparation for a match day. Chiefs led the way a decade ago with the first apprenticeships of this kind and the partnership with Exeter College ensures the players and the club get outstanding training and support.”

Exeter Chiefs’ player development manager Richard Hodges oversees the apprentices at the club.

He said: “Over the last few months, we have worked incredibly hard to reintroduce our apprenticeship programme, providing an additional education pathway for our senior academy players alongside our established university programme.

“We place a real emphasis on supporting our players’ development both on and off the field. We recognise the importance of providing different educational opportunities that not only complement their rugby careers but also help prepare them for life beyond the game.

“We are fortunate to have a wealth of knowledge and experience within the club, particularly across our coaching and strength and conditioning departments, providing an excellent environment for players to gain practical experience while working towards their qualifications.

“These players are only at the beginning of their apprenticeship journey, but it is fantastic to see them embracing the opportunity and investing in their development away from the rugby field.”

We look forward to supporting them throughout their studies and seeing them achieve their academic ambitions alongside their continued rugby development.”
