Rob Gibson has added to his duties within the Exeter Chiefs Academy by becoming the new Academy Manager for the club's Women's section.

The New Zealander has a proven track record in unearthing local Westcountry talent for the club's men's side - and now he is looking to find more female gems from across the region in his new role.

Gibson takes on the role vacated by Spanish international Patricia Garcia, who has returned to her homeland after retiring from professional rugby with the Chiefs Women's side.

"I'm excited about the new role," he said. "As we've seen, the women's game is massively on the rise and it's no different down here, especially with the rise of the Chiefs Women's team, as well as the work we have already put into place.

"Our aim, a bit like the men's system, will be to find that top-quality, local, homegrown player that we can bring through the system and, ultimately, into the Premier 15s side here at the club.

"A lot of what we will do will mirror what we've done with the men's academy, where we know we have had a great deal of success over the years."

Helping to aid the progress of the young players will be current Chiefs Women's player, Eilidh Sinclair, who is taking on the role of Player Development Manager.

The Scottish international, combined with other coaches, will work not only with the club's Centre of Excellence, but also at Exeter College, who are helping to lead the way in the growth of young players, providing three rugby sessions, two strength and conditioning sessions, as well as individual skills and analysis on a weekly basis.

"We've put together a very clear and concise pathway for young female players to follow," added Gibson. "Whether it's through our Centre of Excellence or working at either Exeter or Truro Colleges or assisting Devon RFU with the DPP programme, there are avenues for them all to follow and really develop their game. The College also assists students with future opportunities through their Apprenticeship and Diploma in Sporting Excellence programmes.

"As I said, it's an exciting period for the club and we believe we will see real success with it all moving forward."
