Hometown boy Gulley signs new Chiefs deal

Published on: 14/05/2026

Exeter Chiefs hooker Louie Gulley has penned a new deal for the 2026/27 season and beyond.

The 20-year-old front-rower signed his first pro deal at the end of last season and, before being injured, had been impressing in Chiefs colours this year.

Gulley said: “I’m incredibly excited to sign a new contract with my boyhood club. It really is an honour to pull on the Chiefs shirt. I’ve already had some amazing opportunities this year, so I’m really looking forward to whatever comes next as I continue to learn and be a part of a great environment.”

Born in Crediton, Gulley took childhood inspiration from Chiefs club captain Jack Yeandle’s career path and progressed his way through the ranks at Crediton RFC.

He broke onto the scene, and onto the radar of Chiefs coaches, with impressive performances for the University of Exeter EURFC side in the BUCS Super league. While donning the infamous green and white hoops, Gulley scored more than 20 tries.

The potential and leadership he showed earned him international recognition for England U20s. After an impressive summer for his country, Gulley made his Chiefs debut in November 2025 in a Prem Rugby Cup match against Sale Sharks in Manchester. Just a week later, he donned the captain’s armband for the home cup tie with Bristol Bears.

Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter said: “Our fantastic to have one of our top young players extending his stay at the club. We really feel Louie has a very bright future that will take him into the first team on a regular basis.

“He did very well with England U20s over the summer and was enjoying a strong season on loan to Plymouth Albion, becoming a big part of their success this year before getting injured.

“We have huge expectations for him going forward. He’s exactly the type of player who we believe will take up every opportunity we give him. He works extremely hard, is very dedicated to everything he wants to achieve and has a great temperament for rugby. He’s a very important signing for us going forward.”

Gulley joins fellow England U20s World Championship winner Joe Bailey in signing a new deal this season.
