Gabby Cantorna in action for Exeter Chiefs Women

"I’m sure it’s like putting on a different outfit."

Gabby Catorna is no stranger to the fly-half jersey. She has turned out plenty of times at 10 alongside Chiefs’ scrum-half Flo Robinson as well as running the show for USA Eagles.

More recently found at inside centre, the squad queen turns general for tomorrow’s game against Leicester Tigers Women as Exeter Chiefs look to end this block of PWR games on a high.

Cantorna said: “I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to the challenge of slipping back into that role that I used to be so familiar with. I am hoping we can have some running rugby which is more my style.

“I do not think it [playing fly-half] is something you can forget. The World Cup cycle before I was the 10 the whole way through so I know what I’m doing. I’m sure it’s like putting on a different outfit, it will just feel right when I do it again.”

As one of Chiefs Women’s original players, Cantorna has more than five years of PWR experience. She has played in 78 league games for the club and has scored 351 points with 326 from the kicking tee.

She came on for injured fly-half Liv McGoverne in last weekend’s game against Trailfinders.

“I thought it was an excellent win, a culmination of our defensive work and attacking work finally coming together and it’s the style we want to play. We are a physical team but we also have a great skill-set and we like to move the ball.”

That win saw Chiefs retain their third place in the league. A win tomorrow would give Chiefs Women further security in the top four with a bye week next weekend. Leicester Tigers Women remain winless, but Chiefs are still wary of their threats.

Cantorna said: “When you spoke about the threats, they have a few across the park. Kristen Bitter has a big boot and brings an attacking threat. They have a lot of workhorses, but their threat is in their backs so for us it’s about our forwards sticking to their processes and getting their job done in terms of set-piece and our backs containing that threat and unleashing our own.”

Bitter is a fellow USA Eagle and is always keen to get the ball out to the wings. Cantorna’s style is a little more mysterious!

“I would say my thing is to manipulate a little bit, I am a little less clear cut. I like to paint a picture and go somewhere else. I am a big mental games player when I’m at 10. I am looking forward to getting back into it.”

Exeter Chiefs Women will kick off against Leicester Tigers Women at Mattioli Woods Welford Road at 12:30 tomorrow. The game is being shown live on the PWR’s YouTube channel. Supporter can also follow live updates in the match centre on Chiefs website.
