Dave Ewers says Exeter Chiefs will be looking to crank up the gears as the season heads towards it’s business end.

With just eight rounds left in the scheduled Gallagher Premiership season, Rob Baxter’s side sit on top of the division, four points clear of defending champions Saracens and 14 points clear of next-best Harlequins.

Despite their position of authority, nobody inside Sandy Park is taking anything for granted - and with two testing away days to come, the first of which is against Sale Sharks today (3pm) - the priority for the Chiefs is to start building up a head of steam.

“Getting the five points last week [against Newcastle] was just what we needed after losing up at Gloucester,” said Ewers.“There is nothing better than coming back to Sandy Park, needing a performance, and the getting the win in front of a big crowd.

“That was just what we needed, but now we’ve got two tough away games in a row.We know Sale will be tough, especially at home, and the league is so tight right now.If you look at the table, everyone has something to play for, and a win here or there can really bump you up the table.

“All our focus, though, is on ourselves and making sure we put in a performance each week. As a team knows we don’t get too carried away whether we win or whether we lose, but it’s building up towards the end of the season and we want to start creating some momentum.

“It’s no secret the sides that are winning games each week are those that are playing with real confidence. Hopefully, we can generate some momentum and take that into those last weeks of the season.”
